RFK Jr. Slashes $500M in mRNA Vaccine Research

The mRNA technology, once celebrated for its rapid development of COVID-19 vaccines, is now at the center of a major controversy driven by policy shifts and alarming research findings. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), under Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., has canceled over $700 million in contracts with Moderna and terminated 22 additional mRNA research projects worth nearly $500 million, targeting vaccines for respiratory viruses like H5N1 bird flu. Studies are showing mRNA vaccines cause severe genetic disruptions, potentially leading to mitochondrial failure, immune dysregulation, and increased cancer risks.

HHS Contract Cancellations

In May 2025, HHS revoked a $766 million contract with Moderna to develop an mRNA vaccine against H5N1 bird flu, a virus infecting birds and cattle with potential to jump to humans. On August 5, 2025, Kennedy announced the termination of 22 additional contracts with major pharmaceutical companies like Pfizer and Sanofi Pasteur, totaling nearly $500 million, citing mRNA’s ineffectiveness against mutating respiratory viruses. Kennedy argues that whole-virus vaccines offer broader, safer protection, a stance supported by groups like Children’s Health Defense, which he founded. Critics, including former BARDA officials, warn these cuts leave the U.S. vulnerable to future pandemics by dismantling rapid-response vaccine development.

Research Raising Alarms

New studies have claimed mRNA injections disrupt thousands of genes, causing mitochondrial dysfunction, immune reprogramming, and heightened risks of chronic diseases and cancers, including aggressive “turbo cancers” in younger populations. Others link mRNA vaccines to persistent cellular stress, manifesting as fatigue, digestive issues, and frequent infections. Dr. Angus Dalgleish, an oncologist, alleges 13 mechanisms by which mRNA vaccines may promote cancer, amplifying calls to halt their use. These findings, though not peer-reviewed, have gained significant traction among vaccine skeptics.

Backlash

mRNA technology is being labeled as an experimental “gene-modifying platform” with risks concealed by pharmaceutical companies. Dr. Robert Sullivan’s testimony, claims lipid nanoparticles and synthetic mRNA persist in the body for over 700 days, potentially causing long-term harm. This narrative has driven policy changes, with Kennedy’s HHS redirecting funds to older vaccine technologies, despite their slower development timelines. The backlash, rooted in distrust from COVID-19 vaccine mandates, has intensified public and political pressure to scrutinize mRNA, threatening its role in future medical advancements.
